beautiful weather this weekend
high temperate ~75F, clear skies all day, humidity moderate ~50%

this weekend's actitivities
  • planted a new garden area along fence line in middle level just E & N of bee hives
  • surface area 20' x 6'
  • surface preparation with mower - mowed all existing vines and vegetation to surface with lowest setting on mower
  • dug about one shovel deep over entire surface, removing vines & roots, including a few metal 1" x 4' rebar spikes
  • added 2 wheelbarrows of organic material, last year's wood chips nicely decomposed

plants ...
  • 3 foxglove beardtongue - penstemon digitalis
    • native perennial wildflower growing usually no taller than 3 feet
    • white tubular flowers blooming in early to mid Spring
    • important food source for hummingbirds
    • full sun, it will occur in semi-shaded edge zones as well
    • grows from a fibrous root system.
  • 3 common sneezweed -helenium
    • multicolored blooms for six to eight weeks in mid to late summer
    • great as a cut flower, long stems are sturdy and vase life is long
    • heleniums are naturally resistant, even toxic, to deer and rabbits. (northcreeknurseries)
    • commonly known as 'Sneezeweed' due to the ancient use of its dried leaves in making snuff, inhaled to help sneezing and rid the body of evil spirits
    • daisy-like flowers in a wide array of hot colors, from light yellow to dark red
    • can grow up to 3-5 ft. (gardenia.net)
  • 2 whirled rosinweed
    • adapted to a number of prairie environments, including hillsides, stream banks and traditional open sites
    • prefers full sun
    • attractive to bees, butterflies and birds
    • 3 to 6 feet
    • flowers July to September
  • 1 yellow coneflower
  • 1 aromatic aster
  • re-planted 1 existing plant - unknown small leaves, woody stem, much enjoyed by deer since last summer

        added perimeter of deer netting 4' high around perimeter on 4' green garden metal stakes

        fence line (N) and lowest level near creek outlet

general maintenance
    trimmed ivy beds in front yard
